There are a range of housing options in Newcastle for older people which aim to meet their varied needs. These are provided by the council and Registered Providers.

The majority of these properties are advertised on Newcastle Homes which applicants can bid for. The only exception to this is Assisted Living properties which are allocated through a panel. 

Property adverts will state the property type, whether there is a minimum age requirement and whether there are any additional criteria that must be met by the applicant.

Adapting your Current Property

If your home no longer meets your needs it may be possible to adapt your property to meet your needs.

If you are a homeowner or renting from a private landlord you will need to contact Care and Repair Newcastle.

Care and Repair Newcastle is a Home Improvement Agency and part of Newcastle City Council. They offer reliable information, support, advice and services that can help to make sure your home is fit for purpose. Care and Repair Newcastle offer advice about the services that are available to helping disabled and older people to stay in their own homes longer.

Assisted Living

Assisted living is a housing option for people aged 55 or over and who value their independence but need help with some day to day tasks. Assisted living can maximise your health and wellbeing and help you to live independently for as long as possible.

With Assisted Living you will have your own apartment, your own front door and tenancy. You will pay rent and service charges and a manager will be available during office hours. In addition to this Assisted Living has an onsite care team to provide your planned care and support during the day.

The Support Housing Advisor will carry out an assessment of your housing, care and support needs. Following the assessment a panel will consider whether assisted living is suitable for you.

Housing Plus - Community offers tailored services that help older people to live independently in their own homes. This service can provided to customers who don’t live in one of the sheltered or assisted living developments and provides a little extra housing support along with social and wellbeing activities. This includes access to a Housing Plus Officer, inclusion in activities happening at a local Housing Plus - Sheltered scheme along with Ostara, our 24/7 alarm and response service.
